Parkland: Shooting Outside the Box

-Parsing Parkland-

For What Ails America

‘Shooting outside the box’

The time will come. A time, well after the heyday of internal combustion mechanics when the noise and error of explosion will have left the ears and conscience of most of Mankind, and: it will be a time of comparative quiet.

Yet. Will it be a time of any less violence? For violence has never yet left humankind and violence is the cause of most human sorrow.

Then. In future time the intentional dispatch of human life might well become more serene and less…explosive. Thus, the symptoms associated with intentional, premeditated death will have changed forever but the cause of the ailment (that is violence at the hands of another) will probably, not.

To the amateur… Surface symptoms are so often misjudged to be the underlying problem. They are not.

When Guns Became Passé

(a fanciful consideration)

“Guns: revolutionized life; immortalized death.”

- Julius D. Thomas

When guns, those instruments that so effectively “revolutionized life and immortalized death”, will have been replaced as the most efficient mechanism employable for the sudden extrication of humans from the breath of life. It would be at that moment. When guns become passé.

Energized light, likely would be the most plausible candidate to succeed the lowly, internal combustion, projectile-propelling: gun. Such a device, in a decidedly efficient way, likely: would more quietly remove the explosiveness from the now-preferred means of killing one human by another with a gun.

After all, before the advent of gun powder the silence of the blade was the most favored method of enabling one person to dispatch another. In a way, the silence of death would have come full circle after the course of but a handful of hundreds of years when the laser becomes the “gun”.

Clean. Neat. Virtually: noiseless

Surely in future time, with a mere “dose” of energized light, marvelous destruction could take place: all from the distance of meters or miles. In perfect silence…

As the technology would change; so too might the symptoms of violent death adjust to the times but; would the actual problem, the cause, have changed as well? Not likely.

The Violence Of Mass Shootings

There is a seminal point that has been lost on most of the collective, average American as well as elite elected, brain trusts this day. That in order to stop the spate of violent mass shootings, which has become a veritable plague that tars the landscapes of: cities and schools and entertainment venues and other civilian locales. The elected folks in Washington are mistakenly distracted by an intense obsession to engage in the ever-predictable diatribe.

That: by invoking various and sundry ‘one-sentence’ mantras of Constitutional Amendment. They debate; some against and others on behalf of: the vocal members of so many ‘national rights associations’. They visibly shift under the weight of ponderous political polls. They genuflect before squealing hoards of ham-handed, well-healed special interest lobbyists.

When, in fact, they, the politicians, are so guilty themselves. Guilty. Of having blithely ignored the even more deadly underlying problem in; favor of this obliging obsession with: the recurring symptom.

The problem is nothing less than violence itself. A culture of: Violence. All the while the powers-that-be, as well as Americans at-large, are continuously blinded by the searing muzzle-flash of a…symptom.

A Culture Of Violence

There is a near-universal, American mindset. That, guns, can be readily possessed by high virtue of the terse solemnity of a single-sentence, Constitutional guaranty and; at the same time be reduced to the everyday status of personal playthings.

A post-modern American mindset that is incessantly portrayed and encouraged by lush advertising and dazzling video games and romantic images and other sundry depictions of Corinthian pursuit: that violence is acceptable. All of these visuals simply must succeed in coloring the use of firearms in a way that is long distant from the pure survival effort requirements of true combat or the existential necessities to successful self-defense.

Gross indulgence of consequence-less actions; of perverse enjoyment of so many distracting and engaging digital games of lethal pursuit; of immense and alluring entertainments that energetically and endlessly stress abject physical abuse of others and outright: murder. The symptoms abound. Guns have become the means to the end for so much of the entertainment that accompanies outright…killing.

And anyone can do it! Over: 18 years of age? Come on down: lock and load.

Understandably. The culture of cinematic entertainment too, seems to ceaselessly spawn some sort of smooth, subconscious, psychological transition into real life actions. The blurring of a consequence-less digital existence mustcause aberrant real-life lifestyles that; in turn cause outrageous and murderous behaviors against real-life society.

Still. It is the gun that garners the attention. The gun is still seen and treated, unsuccessfully, as the problem.

The gun isn’t the real problem, however. The gun is only the symptom

All the while, all this time, the gun has somehow succeeded to cleverly disguise itself. As: the problem.

As the gun has been nothing more than a high-profile symptom it has been and still is the single, deadliest symptom of an underlying, juggernaut disease. Violence.

Politician…Heal Thyself

The politicians seem, in this venture to be the amateurs and they have failed even at that. Moreover. They are aided and abetted by a frenzied and swarming media who intersperse harrowing image in between moment upon moment of expensive, on-air ads.

So many politicians are guilty of social malpractice, even. No less guilty of an act of malpractice than might be a doctor who is content to treat symptoms of a fatal condition without having explored and addressed the underlying cause for the deadly device that is the actual threat to life and limb.

In the end, America is failing itself. The underlying problem is nothing less than: virulent VIOLENCE. The symptom is the gun. America is dying while its leaders seek to assuage the symptom and not cure the problem.

What Is a Bigger Problem Than Guns?

Violence

For generations, America has wrung its collective hands over the need: to “control guns”. When, all the time the overwhelming need was and is: to control violence.

As any doctor knows. Controlling the symptoms will never encourage the eradication of the underlying disease.

For generations, America has failed to ameliorate a formidable symptom by trying to control the sacred grail of amendment-granted rights: the gun. While the real problem has festered, unmolested, in a growing and inexorable and slouching, daily, movement, towards the serial infliction of: premature mortality.

All along. Politicians, the media and greater society each continue to insist upon highlighting the evil of the symptom-gun while the real energy for the deadly impetus continues to come from: the problem that is violence.

The Devil and the Dalai Lama

Place 1000 rifles within reach of the Dalai Lama and their threat will be perfectly inert. Without violence the gun (or the death ray of the future) will have no ill effect. None.

The real question is. Not can we disarm gun culture. Can America cure…Violence…?
